Project Objectives Investigation of two items associated with slurry testing and studying repeatability of equipment: FLS Ring Test and Raw Mill Sample Pots. Both items used as part of quality control procedures by the laboratory.
Background Information The pieces of equipment studied had recently been upgraded (modified) and were therefore potentially had some errors.

The students were to undertake tests on each piece of equipment to determine its capability compared to the former equipment.

Further improvements were to be considered in regard to the operations of each item.

This type of assessment work, although specific, is required in industry to ensure all aspects upon quality are checked out.

Problem Solving Methods Used The Q-Ed Team projects were very specific and the following technique steps were used:
  1. Definition of Process
Working of FLS Ring / Slurry Blending Pot
  2. Measure Process
  3. Identify Problems
  4. Opinion Rank Problems
Because the project was a study of equipment performance, steps 2-4 were not of major importance.
  5. Select Problem for Solution
This involved selecting the test procedures used to check apparatus operation and repeatability.
  6. Identify Causes / Selection of Solutions
This involved testing of apparatus and reviewing results.
  7. Select Solutions
This involved a report and conclusions.
Recommendations Geelong Cement will:
  1. Modify the FLS Ring apparatus and undergo further trials on a plant control use.
  2. Put in use the Blending (Sample) Slurry Pot after reviewing a wash out procedure.
