| Project Title |
Wire Breakages |
| Host Organisation |
BHP (1994) |
| Participant Details |
Matthew Flinders Girls Secondary College |
| Background Information |
To reduce the incidence of wire breakages on the barbed-wire
machines through the implementation of a new machine control system and wire pay-off
improvements. The aim was to reduce part reels to less than 5%. |
| Recommendations |
Suggestions focused on three areas: faulty feed, machinery
faults and operator variation. In consultation with employees criteria were established to
ensure that feed was of a high standard and it was recommended that a Quality Assurance
Agreement be established with the three internal suppliers. The team also made a series of
suggestions about cleaning and maintenance. In the area of operator variation the team, in
consultation with employees, devised a new Barb Break Log and suggested that a standard
operating method would reduce variations in wire quality. |
