Project Title Butt Blast Machine Efficiency
Host Organisation Alcoa (1994)
Participant Details Newcomb Secondary College
Background Information Sodium and fluoride have a devastating effect on the brick work in the Carbon Baking Furnace. If the returned butts are not adequately cleaned during the Butts Cleaning Process, the contaminated butts end up in the green anodes causing considerable damage to the furnace. The project was to examine this problem and make suggestions as how to eliminate or reduce the problem.
Recommendations A series of proposals was offered ranging from more regular checks of the Butt Blasting Machine, maintaining a constant average amperage between the two wheels on either side of the Butt Blast Machine, set and maintain manual operating practice through to continuing research and collecting more data in specific areas.
